What It Means To Be A Real Father | By Michael Baisden
My experience being a father has been a rollercoaster of joy, disappointment, frustration, adulation, and confusion.
There have been periods of my daughter’s life where I felt that her mom and I did a great job raising a responsible and caring human being. Then there’s been those moments you look at your kid and ask yourself, who is this person?
Being a dad means providing and protecting. And I’m proud to say that me, and the men in my life, my brother, brother in law, close friends, and relatives have all been in our children’s lives from day one! And that’s important because the next most important factor in being a father after providing and protecting is being available.
There hasn’t been a time in my daughter’s life where she couldn’t pick up the phone and get a response…immediately! You have to be there for them when they call. Whether it’s a boy or a girl. Fathers need to be counted on to step in, step up, put out the fires, and if necessary, whip some ass!
Being a father means being patient when your child doesn’t do things “Your Way!” And having faith that the work you put in will manifest, at some point. But man, let me tell you, it’s not easy, especially when your daughter dates the guy who you think it’s right for her. But you have to trust the process and trust that they will ultimately respond the way you raised them to. Children aren’t clones of us, they are they’re own person; unique individuals who came through us but not from us. I think fathers struggle more than mother’s accepting their children for who they are.
Sometimes they’re not going to choose the career you wanted, or love the person you wanted them to love, or love a person of the same gender but they are still our children and our love for them as fathers must be unconditional.
Lastly, children are expensive! Anyone who thinks the responsibility ends at 18 or 21 is trippin’! Of course, we shouldn’t enable them by bailing them out of every mistake but we should remember they’re young and their going make errors in judgement, just like we did. And they also need us to invest in their dreams. My mother, along with 2 of my co-workers, loaned me 1,000 each that put on the path to where I am today.
But above all else, our number one duty as fathers is to be present. No matter how successful, smart, and independent our children are they need daddy to always be on standby…just in case.
And although they may rarely need us them knowing that we’re there makes all the difference in the world! I just had that conversation with my daughter who, to this day, I still call my Princess! I know she needs me and that’s what I love most about being a father. She knows I got her…no matter what! And that’s what it means to be a real father!
Happy Father’s Day Fellas! And if no one has told you today, you matter!
