Is The Coronavirus Crisis Testing Your Relationship?

The coronavirus outbreak is a health crisis and economic catastrophe. Our lives will never be the same once this is over. Some of us will bury loved ones while many of you reading this article will lose jobs due to layoffs or your company going out of business.

Events like this only happen once in a generation, in this case, once in a century. The last time the world experienced anything similar to this was the Swine Flu outbreak in 1918. 500 million people were infected, and 50 million lost their lives. At the time it was one-third of the world’s population. And although scientist don’t expect anywhere near that number of fatalities it’s going to impact millions all over the world.

But crisis like this also exact a toll on our relationships. The combination of economic stress, being locked in with each other over a long period of time and managing limited resources will reveal how much you truly value a person, and how much they value you. It’s like the curtain being pulled back in Wizard Of Oz. Or maybe a more accurate comparison is the expression in Avatar, “I see you!”

Sometimes what you see is beautiful and affirming like when your partner, friends, and family check up on you to make sure you’re okay. Or they send you money, toilet paper, or paper towels to make sure you have everything you needed. It’s moments like this that reveal how much someone cares about you and how much they are willing to invest. Anyone can call or text to check up on you but will they be there if you need a place to stay, if you need money, or if you want to vent for hours about how scared you are?

The truth is, that although crises like this are stressful, they also cleanse those out of our lives that don’t belong. And, if we’re being honest with ourselves, reveal to us traits within ourselves that need to be worked on, like compassion, humility, and appreciation. Let’s face it, some people deserve to be dumped. When you have a limited amount of time, money, and energy it only makes sense to invest it into those you see in your future, or at the very least, someone who contributes to your happiness and well-being.

Your phone may ring constantly during this lockdown and your DM may be filled with people trying to hook up for a booty call. And people from your past may contact you out of sheer boredom. But when it’s all said and done everyone’s true colors will be revealed. Players only want to play. Once the crisis is over, so goes their interest.

However, couples who truly love each other will have an even stronger relationship and those people who are just kicking it, or half-stepping will see their relationship disintegrate. And maybe that’s not such a bad thing. Maybe this virus is symbolic of our own unhealthy or neglected relationships. We should all use this time to evaluate, heal, and be better. Otherwise, just like the flu, it will be back next season.
