Missouri man died after an attempt to bomb hospital amid coronavirus epidemic
A man was caught and later killed after plotting to blow up a Missouri hospital, the FBI reported on Wednesday.
Timothy Wilson, 36, died after the FBI attempted to arrest him on Tuesday, March 24. The man was subdued in Belton, Missouri headed to pick up his car bomb but instead met the FBI.
The agents said they’d been investigating Wilson for a “months-long domestic terrorism investigation.”
Officials say the man was armed during the takedown. Media have yet to identify whether or not Wilson was killed by the FBI or died by suicide.
Wilson was shot then taken to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The ordeal is still under federal investigation.
An FBI alert that went out to state and local law enforcement agencies in the region said Wilson also “shared instructions on how to make an [improvised explosive device] with another … Domestic Terrorism (DT) subject.” Someone in the Kansas City area.
ABC News reported that the other alleged domestic terrorism “subject” is Jarrett Smith, who was arrested in September 2019 while he was still an active member of the U.S. Army. The arrest was for another terrorism plot where he later “pleaded guilty to federal charges of distributing information that relates to weapons of mass destruction.” He is currently awaiting sentencing.
FBI officials said their surveillance of Wilson proved that he was a violent extremist – with explicit hatred towards specific races and religion. He also expressed anti-government rhetoric.
NBC reported that during the investigation, they found that Wilson was planning a bomb threat. FBI told media that he also considered a predominately black school, a synagogue and a mosque.
Officials said that because of the coronavirus outbreak, Wilson decided to “accelerate his plan to use a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device in an attempt to cause severe harm and mass casualties.”
The specific hospital the man was targeting was not identified.
