Passengers Posted Pictures Of Their Packed Flights
Passengers from two separate carriers posted pictures of their packed flights, where there was a lack of social distancing like the airlines promised. “I’m probably more likely to get infected there than I would be in the ICU!” Dr. Weiss told ABC News
Should The Airlines Stop Flying During The Pandemic?
America’s flight attendants are fed up with not being protected. In the last few days, airlines have seen a significant increase in air traffic. To put it simply, planes are starting to get packed, likely due to states lifting their ‘Stay At Home’ orders.
To adjust to this sudden surge some major carriers are allowing passengers to switch seats to create social distancing but that’s ‘mission impossible’ if planes are at only fifty percent capacity.
This potentially dangerous situation prompted an immediate response from the union of flight attendants. In a press release, the union stated that they wanted the airlines to “end all leisure travel until the virus is contained.” This came directly from Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA), in her correspondence to Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao and Health Secretary Alex Azar.
I myself had no idea of just how vulnerable flight attendants were, as well as pilots and other airport workers until I saw a segment on cable news highlighting flight attendant’s frustration with passengers not being mandated to wear masks.
The union also added this language in their statement, “For air travelers, we recommend that the federal government provide all airports sufficient numbers of disposable cloth or paper masks that are more effective than homemade masks at limiting viral spread,” Nelson says in the letter.
“These should be provided free to all members of the public entering airport buildings with the stipulation that they be worn at all times on airport property and on airplanes, and only removed momentarily when necessary for identity verification or food and drink.”
I don’t know about you but there’s no way in hell I would board a flight full of people not wearing masks and I certainly wouldn’t think about not wearing one myself. I care about my health, the health of fellow passengers, and of course the flight crew. I’m shocked that everyone doesn’t feel the same way!
