[VIDEO] “This is my job as a father.” Says Dwyane Wade Speaking On His Unconditional Love And Support Of His Son After His Attendance At Miami Pride
Earlier this year, Gabrielle Union and the rest of their family attended Miami Beach Pride in support of Dwayne Wade’s 12 year-old-son, Zion Malachi Airamis Wade. Although the NBA star, who just ended a 16-year career in April, was not able to attend due to his basketball schedule, he made sure to emphasize his support by sharing pictures of his family at Pride with the caption “We support each other with Pride! Wish I was there to see you, smile kid!”
However, Wade’s support for his son led to homophobic and offensive comments. But as we know this would not hinder the basketball player from the way he views his son.
In an interview with Variety he discussed the backlash saying “I don’t really talk about it much because it’s Zion’s story to tell,” he continued, “I think as a family, we should support each other. That’s our job. And my job as a father is to facilitate their lives and to support them and be behind them in whatever they want to do.”
He clarified, “This is my job as a father.”
Along with discussing how he handles fatherhood, he emphasized that all parents should realize that specific parenting skills must be tailored to the personalities and needs of each child individually.
“They are all different, and I have to get to know them and where they are. I have to say to most parents, get to know your kids,” he said. “Don’t put your wants and needs on them.”
The sports player was surprised that the post about his support for his son even resulted in backlash. “I’m very uneasy about accolades that come from supporting my kids or the negativity that comes from it. I’m doing what every parent has to do. Once you bring kids into this world, you become unselfish. It’s my job to be their role model, to be their voice in my kids’ lives, to let them know you can conquer the world. So, go and be your amazing self and we’re going to sit back and just love you” said Wade.
Wade is the father of 4 kids. He has 3 sons, Zaire, Xavier and Zion and a daughter Kaavia who he shares with his wife Gabrielle Union. He firmly believes that unconditional love should be the standard when it comes to parenting.
Last month was the 12-year-olds birthday and he shared a post calling Zion his “mini-me.” The caption read, “Happy 12th Birthday to my mini-me Zion! I’ve asked you over and over not to grow up on me and now look at you. Getting taller. Becoming more and more good looking every day and teaching all of us along the way. I love the kid that you are and i love the young man that you’re becoming. I am so thankful that I was chosen to be your father and guide you thru this world. Continue to be brave. Continue to be the smartest person in the room. Continue to be Zion Malachi Wade!”
