Report finds that the drug promoted by Trump causes more deaths than standard care
A malaria drug widely promoted by President Donald Trump during his haphazard press conferences showed “no benefit” for treating coronavirus in U.S. veterans hospitals. In fact, the researchers reported that “hydroxychloroquine use alone was associated with an increased risk of mortality compared to standard care alone.” The study looked at treatments inside U.S. veterans hospitals, but the 368 patients studied gives a peek into the drug’s effectiveness. APNews reported that the study was posted online but has yet to be reviewed by other specialists. The study looked at the roughly 28% of participants who were given hydroxychloroquine plus usual care died, versus 11% of those getting routine care alone. Results found that 22% of those receiving the drug and azithromycin died too. However, because the studied group was smaller, researchers could not rule out other possible variables that may have led to the deaths. “I’m not going to recommend it. I’m not going to not recommend it.” – CDC Director Robert Redfield on the drug hydroxychloroquine to treat Covid-19. Trump has suggested it has protective effects against Covid-19, although researchers say there’s no evidence of that. #CNNTownHall pic.twitter.com/dJK4WBx2Fe

After listening to a President Donald Trump press conference, man dies after ingesting non-FDA approved drug for coronavirus
A man in Arizona died and his wife is in critical condition after ingesting chloroquine phosphate to self-medicate, CNN reported. The couple’s, identity has not been included in reports due to privacy concerns. But the wife did speak to NBC news and revealed where they got the idea. “I had (the substance) in the house because I used to have koi fish,” the wife told NBC. “I saw it sitting on the back shelf and thought, ‘Hey, isn’t that the stuff they’re talking about on TV?'” Family friend Keriann Cerski Furreboe said the couple, both in their 60s, were not sick, but that they were worried about becoming infected and wanted to take preventive measures. “When she called me last night, she was obviously in shock,” Cerski Furreboe recalled to ABC 15. “She said, ‘We thought we were going to get sick, so we took something. We started to get weird reactions so I called the poison control center and they took us to the hospital and his heart stopped.'” Cerski Furreboe also told ABC 15 that the couple was persuaded to take the drug because of the President’s early confidence that the drug was showing “very encouraging early results.” However, Dr. Anthony Fauci, top infectious disease expert, and aid for the coronavirus task force emphasized the need for testing. During press conferences and news appearance Fauci has positioned himself as a scientist. “Anecdotally they might work, ” he said. “But my job is to prove definitively from a scientific standpoint that they do work. Chloroquine has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of malaria, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis but it has not been vetted for the treatment of COVID-19. Dangerously, the drug is also “an additive commonly used at aquariums to clean fish tanks,” said hospital system Banner Health. “Given the uncertainty around COVID-19, we understand that people are trying to find new ways to prevent or treat this virus,” Dr. Daniel Brooks, Banner Poison and Drug Information Center medical director, said in the statement. “But self-medicating is not the way to do so.” Fear is fatal and misinformation is abundant during these times of uncertainty with a novel virus. These are new terrains we are dealing with, and sadly people will result to a quick fix in fear of possible death. Cerski Furreboe said the couple were not the type of people to do “weird home remedies” “They were being led by people with power to do that, saying this is okay, this is approved. And it wasn’t. They should be held responsible,” she told ABC 15. Trump tweeted this message that may have given many Americans an unproved, untested hope for recovery and prevention:For those of you with similar fears and anxiety, Dr. Brooks has some incredibly settling sentiments: the majority will get through this. “The vast majority, we are thinking around 85 to 90% of people, are going to get through a COVID-19 infection with supportive care only,” he said. “Do not take any medications, specifically for COVID-19, without being hospitalized.” Check out my new website MingleCity.com and join The Michael Baisden Travel Club. The FDA has moved mountains – Thank You! Hopefully they will BOTH (H works better with A, International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents)…..
