Hot News: Singer Teddy Pendergrass dies at age 59 - Post your comments!

Teddy Pendergrass, who became R&B's reigning sex symbol in the 1970s and '80s with his forceful, masculine voice and passionate love ballads and later became an inspirational figure after suffering a devastating car accident that left him paralyzed, died Wednesday at age 59.

The singer's son, Teddy Pendergrass II, said his father died at Bryn Mawr Hospital in suburban Philadelphia. The singer underwent colon cancer surgery eight months ago and had "a difficult recovery," his son said.

"To all his fans who loved his music, thank you," his son said. "He will live on through his music."

Pendergrass suffered a spinal cord injury and was paralyzed from the waist down in the 1982 car accident. He spent six months in a hospital but returned to recording the next year with the album "Love Language."

He returned to the stage at Live Aid in 1985, performing from his wheelchair.

One of the "real icons" as opposed to one of those self proclaimed ones is gone too soon. If ever I have the opportunity to be a part of a musical tribute to "Teddy" you can count on my time as being donated!

"It's so Good to be Loved by Somone when Soneone Loves You Back"; one of my favorites. Teddy loved his fans just as we loved him. Much love Teddy; you will be solely missed but you music will forever be. Gone too soon! May God grant your family comfort.

His music transends time. I just ended a relationship in 2009 and God blessed me with a wonderful GOD fearing brother in 2010.Yesterday I was listening to Teddy's greatest hits and several of the songs apply to the new love in my life. I will forever love Teddy and I thank his family for sharing him with the world.

My heart is sadden by your passing Teddy. As I know you are now standing walking with the heavenly choir. My son called me - he remembered I told him it was you Teddy that started his journey. You were the cause of millions of babies. Oh how do I remember. You will be truly missed and remembered. God Bless you and your family.

Needless to say, I luuved Teddy'd music, his voice, his style.... what else can I say?? He will be sorely missed by all who love and appreciate music. My heart goes out to his family and his friends. He was so unique, there was no one like Teddy. I also admired his determination to regard his accident as a temporary pause in his performing career, and he came back, not only to sing for us again, but with an even greater purpose - to bring the plight of the disabled to those who could assist them to be productive and proud of what they have the ability to accomplish. This is yet another gifted life that has left us much too soon. I can't help but wonder if Teddy had chemotherapy and if so, if that didn't accelerate his demise? Cancer is a symptom of an imbalance. Chemotherapy and radiation are killers. This has been a devastating week. A friend's father just died from two holes "accidently" puncturing his intestine while undergoing a colonoscopey and bled to death. My mother was undergoing repair surgery, but blood was cut off from her colon too long and she never left the hospital. Makes you wonder doesn't it?
