Songstress, musician, dancer, spoken word artist, philanthropist-- are just a few titles 2011 Grammy Nominee, CAROLYN MALACHI holds.
Carolyn is a Washington DC native whose great grand-father happens to be legendary jazz pianist John Malachi. Carolyn was born from musical roots but did not grow into her talent until 2005, when she was a junior at Shepherd University. After taking a course in sound design, Carolyn realized the power of the arts.
Inspiration gleaned from of a hip hop performance at a local college fair coupled with the motivation of friends led Carolyn to begin singing for the first time. From that moment Carolyn began nourishing her craft.
Carolyn went on to release two albums: Revenge of the Smart Chicks & Revenge of the Smart Chicks II. ‘Revenge of the Smart Chicks’, is a rally call to empower women in the arts. After the release of her first album, Carolyn founded Smart Chicks Inc. and its flourishing Smart Chicks Network which aims to develop visibility and leadership opportunities for women in the arts. The growing network actively promotes Carolyn’s artistry and philanthropic efforts.
Carolyn’s sound is a soothing genre-bending blend of jazz, pop, R&B, and spoken word. Her 2010 release of the “Lions, Fires & Squares” EP is composed of songs regarding relationships, love, and strength which bear influence of her recent tours in South Africa inspired by the South African artist Hip Hop Pantsula.
The single “Orion” from the “Lions, Fires, & Squares” EP has earned Carolyn a 2011 Grammy Nomination for Best Urban Alternative Performance.
The Washington Post describes Carolyn’s infectious musical style as “Hard to put in words” and Urban Network raves, ”[Carolyn] represents a warm yet challenging new presence – one not to be underestimated or denied”. With recent media comparisons to avant-garde soul/R&B artists such as: Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, and Janelle Monae, Carolyn Malachi is quickly becoming a popular international brand in jazz and soul.
Carolyn’s path to earning a 2011 Grammy nomination has not been easy. In 2009, Carolyn experienced traumatic hardships. She lost her job, house, car and other material possessions. To add fuel to the fire, Carolyn was involved in a bad relationship and became ill. Support from family and close friends led her to keep the faith. Carolyn further wrapped herself into the arts for comfort. Her musical outlet led her to become recognized by The Recording Academy and now her incredible journey of success forges on. Carolyn refused to allow adversity to consume her. As a result, she is a walking testament of struggle, progress, and sunshine.
“I turned my challenges into opportunities,” says Carolyn, “Onward and upward.”
