I live music diversly,
from Stevie Wonder
to the Black Eyed Peas
Grab a lick from Fats Waller
on my way to Tchaicovsky
Throw a party for Nancy Wilson
and invite the Ernie Scott Trio
just so I can tell them all
that Ray Charles
and Della Reese are my heroes.
And while Ella and Sachmo are blowing a riff
I'll sit back while Tupac and Biggie Smalls start to spit
and just when you thought
Jazz and Hip Hop
were the limit of my taste
I'll ask Willie Nelson and John Mayer
to nicely put you in your place
'cause I was raised on Parliment
with a side order of The Who.
My 8 track played back Led Zepplin
followed by Christopher Cross and his crew.
I banged booties with Bootsy
but Teddy P. helped get them in bed.
Michael swooned them,
Al Jareau crooned 'em,
and Gill Scott Herron got ALL IN their head.
ZZ Top rocked my ride
right next to Run DMC
and without Tony Bennet
there's no way I could be me.
So engrossed is my passion for music and prose
that Babara Streisand, and Mozart,
and yes I suppose
my stack would not be complete without
Ray, Goodman, and Brown.
And I love old school beats
replayed with new school sounds...
Ahh... my head can get spinnin'
dizzy pleasures as I troop
through this delicate balance of musical soup
so don't think that you know me,
cause I'm way too complex.
To you it's Jazz, Rock, or Hip Hop,
but to me
it's just musical ex!
